Don't reformat your hard disk.

Start in safe mode and run your virus scan.

Instead of downloading a new AV, just renew your old AV.

By a CD with an AV and Install it via hardware.

It's the anti virus software that crashing ur computer their the ones that input the virus and make it look like they cleaned it I especially hate Norton Anti Virus with passion that's the worst program in the world uses up most of ur memory get in the way of everything you do on your comp including Internet connection. Don't use any antivirus system Microsoft windows has its own running in the back round thats all you need, if you really need anti virus program then go ahead and download ezantivirus etrust software from http://home3.ca.com/Microsoft/Default.aspx?sc_lang=en-US
I have been using my computer for 10 years its always been connected to the internet I browse all the time I have never gotten a virus on my computer works fine. The only time when I had a virus on my comp and it did crash I had to format the whole drive was hen I had Norton installed

Virus name would help u more anyways..Did you try online virus scan, give a try, next if u had a smart virus/spyware it Will never let you delete cos it is meant to be for this stuff..

I think system restore will not work in safe mode now if u can get rid out of this virus after online scan its good ,, but if not then for last you can format your drive C // hope virus had not infected all the portions..

Next time download Free anti-virus - avast! 4 Home Edition

if you have your own OS CD with product key you can use it..

below are online scanning URL

You can run a free online scan as well as some malware can actually corrupt or disable your resident security products. Here are a few online scans you can run:
Trend - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Panda - http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm
Norton - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Second download, update and run scans using the following products:
SuperAntispyware
http://superantispyware.com/
Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
AVG AntiSpyware
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after downloading and updating)

Third, after cleaning your system, disable System Restore, reboot and re-enable System Restore when you log back on. This will clear the malware that may still be lurking in System Restore, which could be reinstalled should you need to rollback at some point. Additionally, a reboot may be required to complete the malware removal process.

Lastly, you may also want to install the following tool. It is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
================================
If you cannot get it removed after the above, you may want to join a tech group that specializes in providing manual instructions on malware eradication.

Go to trendmicro.com and have them run your virus scan over the internet. Its free. When done and fixed go to grisoft.com and download AVG free virus protection.

it depends on what kind of virus it is. most likely you are going to have to reformat your computer. unless your friend has the same exact computer as you, do not use the same recovery disc. if u do us it it would just fry the hard drive. you need to get the correct disc or send the computer into your nearest computer store.

the "disc" your missing is on the hard drive... when your computer is loading up there should be a "push X button for recovery options"... that what you need to do... sorry
