There were ARAB EMPIRES that were superpowers, and Saladin's Empire was a superpower.

Saladin was the Sultan of Egypt and Syria, was a 12th-century Kurdish Muslim general and warrior from Tikrit, in present day northern Iraq. He founded the Ayyubid dynasty of Egypt, Syria, Yemen (except for the Northern Mountains), Mesopotamia, Mecca, Hejaz and Diyar Bakr.
The Middle East, c. 1190. Saladin's empire and its vassals shown in red (click on link just below); territory recovered from the Crusader states 1187-1189 shown in pink. Light green indicates Crusader territories surviving at Saladin's death.

Also, the Turks, however, were a great power via the Ottoman Empire (Muslims of Asia that ruled the majority of the Muslim world- but the Turks are not Arab).

Yes. In less then 100 years after Mohamed they ruled from the Kilimanjaro to mid Spain.

By the way, don't be mistaken, they still ARE a superpower, only not in the economical, political or military sense. It is still Arabs in control from Iraq to Morocco (where they are a minority), and their language is used all over the muslim world, up to non-arabic countries as Pakistan or China.

This makes their cultural influence bigger then, for example, that of France or Japan.

For this reason "Divide and rule" has always been a major rule for powers, when dealing with Arabic countries.
