Hey all!! Alright, for auditions for Urinetown in the coming semester the requirements are a ballad, an upbeat, and a monologue, each of the requirements can't be over a minute. I'm hoping for the part of Little Sally.
I'm a alto/mezzo-soprano with a pretty good range, but my strongest notes are under high e (e5), and I have a really well developed lower range.
- I think I should be fine finding a monolouge(I have three books to search through!!)
- I'm looking at 'I Know Things Now' from INTO THE WOODS for my upbeat. I think it displays youth and it's a fun song that cuts well. However, I still would be open to suggestions! - I've looked at a bunch of stuff for my ballad... but I can't really seem to find any ballads that make me seem younger... any suggestions at all?? Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!

As additions, I have my own accompianist that I am allowed to take with me to the auditions. And the monologues are all from plays (I'm a theatre major, so I know plays a lot better than musicals)

OK, first of all remember than many accompanists cannot sight read Sondheim all that well. Proceed at your own risk with that one.

For your upbeat song, I would suggest considering
My New Philosophy - You're A Good Man Charlie Brown
Not For The Life of Me - Thoroughly Modern Millie
I would say Good Morning Baltimore from Hairpsray, but many still say it's overdone and with the movie coming out... you be the judge.
Amayzing Mayzie - Suessical

I'm sure there are more :-) I'll add if I can think of them.

For your ballad:
Home - Beauty and the Beast
A Change In Me - Beauty and the Beast
God Help the Outcasts - The Hunchback of Notre Dame
I Know The Truth - Aida

I just saw that you want something that makes you seem younger... well... maybe something in the teen character genre like Grease, Little Mermaid, Charlie Brown, Light in the Piazza, or taking a cue from Clara in Light in the Piazza you can sing most anything 'youthful' :-) as long as the lyrics themselves don't give away your character's age.

As for your monologue, if your books ore those that are made up monologues and you have the time try not to limit yourself to those. If you know of a character from a play, look for a speech that she does or a scene that can be converted to a monologue instead of a ready made monologue.

I think "I Know Things Now" sounds like the perfect song for your audition. The only other upbeat-younger sounding song I could think of for you is "The Simple Joys of Maidenhood" from Camelot. It's a goofy song, a little more classical in style, but it's hilarious if you play up the irony and self-delusion that Guenevere is operating under.

in case your handiest 12 i might opt for well morning baltimore (: its amusing and catchy and alternatively than abba since abba demands a far older voice to sing it. Go for which one you revel in and think you're satisfactory at since then your ardour and amusement will stand out. Hope this is helping you (:

Try for your balad "Much More" from The Fantasticks. This is a great song for a young girl.
