I don't know where you live but harvest time where I am, Ontario, is August. We're early this year, but I'd give them at least another month.

It really depends on what kind of peas you planted, and your string beans, or snap beans as we call them in the South, can really be done anytime...actually, my mother mixes string beans and peas together sometimes when she cans them. If you get curious, just go outside and pick one of them, and if they look like a good size, then they are ok. Its not really that critical. Most pods of peas and snap beans will get to be about 5 or 6 inches long on average, however.

Peas are ready when pods are `plump`, that is the pod is full of peas. Pick one and check. Runner Beans are ready when they are about 6 inches long, as they grow older and longer they usually become more coarse and `stringy`. The more beans you pick, the longer the plant will produce.

Feel the peas in the pod and if they feel like there the normal size of a pea then pick them. You didn't say what kind of peas they were but if they are purple hull peas the hull will have a purple color to them and you can feel the peas inside them. When you pick one they should be easy to pop open. Green beans shouldn't be to smal but they don't taste good when there too large look at the ones in the grocery store and compare them.

Peas-when the pod is plump. Beans- when the bean is filled out .
