You don't need to know anything. They'll usually teach you anything you don't know. Stretching and flexibility can help you out alot. Some basic things you can practice are rolls ( frontward/backward), cartwheel, handstand and your bridge.

Some people call those sports, some don't. The Olympics call gymnastics a sport, but not cheerleading. That doesn't make any sense. I Believe they are both sports, but to be fair, if you believe these are sports, you would also have to believe marching band is a sport (it meets all the same criteria). If I could see how some people would not consider marching band a sport, I can agree they may have a reasonable argument for cheerleading, and gymnastics not being sports. I coach youth cheerleaders, I know we pay the same, practice the same, get injured the same, we compete (but we compete differently). My daughter once didn't get a job when the interviewer continued to not allow her to answer "cheerleading" 4 times to the question "do you play any sports?". That said, People in cheerleading know its a sport. People who aren't, are ignorant of the facts, and they don't care enough to be enlightened. I will say, I have never heard any band people caring they are not considered a sport. It is likely because they like to distance themselves from the dumb jock stereotype. If we want it added here, send requests to the people who run it. EVERYONE.

I, being a gymnast, think you shouldn't do gymnastics if you are just doing it for cheerleading. This may be biased but it is true. I think that you could start doing tumbling because if you start doing gymnastics now, you will never get your tumbling skills in time for next year. Lots of people think, "oh, gymnastics is just flipping." Well guess what? Its not! There is bars and beam and vault. There is dance, balance, strength and endurance. You would excell faster in tumbling because you have to learn a lot more when you do gymnastics.

If you are interested in gymnastics to become a cheerleader, a tumbling class may be your best route. You will learn basic tumbling skills so if you don't know how to do anything don't worry! Cartwheels, handstands, and round-offs are skills you can learn, and if you work on your flexibility, as well as upper body(arms and shoulders) and lower body (abs, legs) strength, things will get easier! Also work on your jumps for cheerleading, which is something else that you can learn in a tumbling/cheerleading class! Good Luck!

You don't need to know anything. Just when you get there try and know what the coaches are talking about so if the say do a somersault try and know what that is so you can tell them if you can do it or not. I have had girls on my team start out in gymnastics and they all made Varsity cheer leading. Don't worry there is nothing to worry about

They will teach you what to do.

If you would like to see a video of what a cheer tumbling class looks like, go here: http://geocities.com/aescougarcheer/ It's on the bottom left of the page in 3 parts.

dont worry about it. they will teach you n/e thing you dont already know. i just started recently and you'll start at level 1 which is super easy and they just start with th basics. to get more flexible though, you might want to do some leg stretches. also, if you already know how, you should practice your cartwheels, round offs, handstands, bridge, front-rolls, etc.
