First he rides 18km away from his ranch.
Then he rides back 11km. At that point he is (18km - 11km = 7km) 7km from his ranch.
Then he rides 6km further away. At that point he is (7km + 6km = 13km) 13km from his ranch.

Basically, he goes a positive 18 km, then loses 11 km of his progress, and then goes another 6 km correctly....
