I think this practice started when Gentlewomen had maids to dress them and they were mainly right-handed so it made it easier for the maid to do them up.

I have no idea. I buy shirts from guys and girls so whenever I put on a shirt, my friends always go "hey, you're wearing a guy's shirt again"
