So I just got my license and i'm on my own. Actually drove it somewhere. The eclipse has been sitting on my driveway since about March. It barely leaves. And today when I went home from my friend's house, the light came on when i started it. The rpm was moving to 2,000. It usually just idles at 1,000. I didn't know what to do, so I shut it off. Call my mom and I pop the hood and it was hot. I was inside his house for about an hour. I checked the radiator cap or my car and his. He drove to bentonville and to his house and mine was hotter. And I didn't drive as far. I don't want to crack a gasket or anything. I did drive my car home after I thought it was okay. Its on my driveway. What could have done this? I did have an alternator replaced two weeks ago if that helps. Thanks

Ricky, freak not my man!! It sounds like the idle control may be broken. Just take it to the Mitsubishi dealer for a diagnosis. If they want to charge you too much for a diagnosis, just ask them to pull the codes on the drive. With a little schmoozing, that should be free. Take you dad or mom along to help grease the skids.

When you get a Check Engine light, it just means the computer found something wrong and recorded a code in it's memory identifying the problem. Write down the codes and descriptions and take them to the garage of your choice and they should be able to take it from there.

If you have a thermometer (water temp gauge), watch it closely and if it gets to red, stop and turn off the engine. If you have a temp indicator light, stop and turn off the engine if it comes on.

Let us know what you find out.

Good luck,
Larry

P.S. I LIKE the AutoZone idea.

By the way, if you Google ecllipse forum, you'll probably find several great forums where you can ask questions and other ecllipse owners and experts can answer them,. I have a Dodge Charger and I've found the forums helpful.

Check engine light could mean any one of dozens of faults. AutoZone is a good place to go to the specific engine DTC (diagnostic trouble code). But they expect you to buy stuff from you (replacement parts).

You can get an engine scanners for less than $75. It is something good to have because your check engine light could be caused by something as simple as loose gas cap.

Once you get the code, you can come back here and post a question with the DTC code.

Hahahaha... Check engine brings out the hypochondriac in all of us...

Take it to a mechanic and pay the crazy amounts of money to have them pretty much turn the light off, or get used to that little flicker of joy in your dash...

take your car to auto zone and they will run a computer on it and they will tell you why the engine light is on and it is free.
