It's getting frustrating seeing one film series after another (Harry Potter, Pirates, The Matrix, Star Wars, etc...), for those of us who aren't "hardcore" fans, where they build up all these confusing, and complex mythologies, and subplots, that really aren't pertinent to the central story, and each installment in the series becomes more convoluted. Not to mention the overlength (most escapism type movies don't really need to be longer then 2 hours).

Whatever happened to straight forward storytelling, with one central theme, and a few central characters?? Movies where you didn't need to watch each one more then once to understand the story, and all the characters. I think it's just bad screenwriting, and the idea, that "more is always better."

I'd never read a Harry Potter book, before I saw the first film, and I was like, who are these people?? It was as if the filmmakers just dived right into the story, assuming everyone was already well acquantied with these characters.

I mean look at Spielbergs early work, like "E.T." for example, or the first of the Indiana Jones films (Raiders).

I mean these were films that were built around a central idea, and a few characters, and that you didn't need to be a series "geek" to appreciate, and fully understand.

I agree with you on the Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings, I had not read any of the books from either of them and I was lost too. My boyfriend has read all the books from both and knows the sub plots and such, I get so bored when I have to have him explain who/what is going on because they don't make it clear in the film. I don't care for the new Star Wars or the Matrix ones either, just too much stuff I need to know before I start watching them... I hate when the movie makes you feel like you need to study before you can watch a sequel.

About 95% of the movies I have seen, I never remember the character's names even while watching the movie. I just divide the people up into good guys and bad guys which makes things easier.

If you think the Pirates movies had confusing, complex mythologies and subplots it's going to be difficult to find a movie that is simple and straightforward enough for you.

I know, but I don't watch those. :) Another series you didn't need to know a lot about and enjoy was Gilligan's Island. LOL.

When I read your title, I thought you meant about those movies that make the tomboys/geeks/nerds/etc seem like the hero and the pretty girly girls as the enemies. Movies like that make it seem like all pretty girls are mean and evil.
