Hi. I have a great idea for an internet buisness and need advice on what to do to develop it. There are many books about doing this, but the problem is that most of them are about selling an item, my site is more about a service. I don't want to give the idea out for fear of someone stealing it. Does anyone know if there is a specific person that has the job of helping someone like me. Someone I could go to or hire that would help me get my buisness started without taking my idea. And how does one go about patening or trademarking their idea when it is not a physical item, but a site idea..for instance something like NetFlix. What did the founder have to do to make sure their idea wouldn't get ripped off? Any advice would be helpful. Thankyou so much

If you are in the USA, I would advise going on http://www.score.org and finding the score office nearest you. They have counselors who are experienced "retired" business persons who give advice and cousel for free. Everything you share with them is kept in the strictest of confidence and they'll give you advice as to your next steps.

BTW the URL for the US Patent and Trademark office is http://www.uspto.gov

Good luck.

Well as far as patent and trademarking You have to fill out some government forms I don't know the web address though. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that will help you w/o stealing your idea. As far as being ripped off, you have to get a lawyer Probably a contract lawyer You might want to see someone who is in e-commerce or take an ecommerce class if you can. Good luck with your idea I hope it is a success for you.

You can't patent or trademark an idea for a business, and if someone else wants to start a similar business even if they got the idea from yours, you can't stop them. Think about it - otherwise there would be one pizza chain, one car company, etc etc etc

If you develop a website, you can copyright it, and someone wanting to compete would not be allowed to have a website that looked just like yours.
