or is there a way to change the gears to get better MPH on the freeway? right now its pulling 4200-4800 rpm at 65-70mph.

No, I can't think of any Tranny that would match up with out thousands of dollars in custom fitting. Wasn't that year a shaft drive? if not, you can change the rear sprocket. If it is, check and see if you can change the final drive gears in the shaft. On the other hand, unless your lucky enough to live in one of the few states that allow speeds over 65, why bother? It's just gonna get you in trouble.

Smaller rear sprocket and/or bigger front sprocket. Ride less aggressively to save gas. Short shift 1-3-5 will slow acceleration, but might save you some pennies in gas.

Jap bike are built to be replaced, not repaired. You'd need to re-machine the entire gearbox casting, gears and engaging mechanism. With all the dough you'd spend changing over, you could have a nice couple of FLHS's and a Sportster or two instead.

No its not worth it. Like the guy above said, change your sprocket size. You will lose acceleration but you will get it back on the freeway.

you can do it but it would cost a lot of money, just upgrade to a newer bike if you want to do all that.
