The intended purpose of Castor oil is for use as a laxative. What you will likely experience are loose bowels and possibly diarrhea along with cramps which may be mistaken for contractions. A danger in taking Castor oil is becoming dehydrated which will also cause uterine contractions. However, if you are not ready to go into labor anyway, once your are re-hydrated, the contractions will stop. There are mixed views on if taking Castor oil will cause the baby to pass meconium before birth. Having the first bowel movement before birth leads to possible aspiration of the tainted fluid which in turn can cause infection in your baby's lungs. While you will find some women who will swear they have gone into labor by taking Castor oil, my personal belief is they would have gone into labor without taking it as well. Bottom line is you can not induce your own labor (if you could I would have, all 4 of my babies were born past their due date). If you are in active labor than walking does help by releasing natural oxytocins which help the dilation process. I was effaced and dilated for 5 weeks with my 3rd child. She was still born 5 days past her due date. My recommendation is stay away from the Castor oil without direct supervision by your doctor or midwife.

My grandmother had me drink caster oil when I was thirty nine weeks, and there were two things that it did for me. One was make me sick to my stomach, and the other was go to the bathroom a lot. That was with my first child, the other two, I found that walking was the best thing for me. Not a slow walk, one that was fast enough to get my heart rate up. The next day I went into labor.

Why are you even considering castor oil when you are only 38 weeks? As anxious as you are to get things going, you need to relax and let nature take it's course. Your baby will come when it is ready to. If you are well past you due date, that's a different story, but for now you need to let things be. Castor oil is very dangeous anyway. Go for a walk or have sex if you really feel the need to speed things up. 2 weeks may seem like forever, but it passes quicker than you think.

No! Castor oil causes gastrointestinal cramping not uterine contractions. This is an old wives tale and can lead to dehydration. If you want to speed things along do lots of breast stimulation, take a walk, or have some sex (sperm is supposed to soften the cervix). But in the end it will happen when you body is ready. Good luck and speedy thoughts!

Why? The baby could easily have three weeks to go before s/he'd like to leave.
"It turns out that it wasn't. When researchers in the late 1980s followed a group of healthy, white women with regular menstrual cycles, they discovered that pregnancy in first-time mothers averaged eight days longer than this, or forty-one weeks plus one day..."

"Is taking castor oil for inducing labor okay for both the unborn child and mother?
Castor oil is one of the most unpleasant ways to induce labor. It makes the mother nauseous and it often causes diarrhea. Furthermore its safety has not been evaluated by large randomized controlled studies. I personally know about several cases of fetus distress during labor obviously related to the use of castor oil. I use this opportunity to mention that women often ask me about 'natural' methods of labor induction. My answer is that there are no natural methods of induction. If a method is effective, it means that it is not natural, because it has preceded the signals given by the baby. We understand today that the fetus participates in the initiation of labor by sending messages that mean: 'I am ready'. (For example the mature baby's lungs can release in the amniotic fluid factors that play a role in birth physiology). Whatever the method, an induced labor is usually longer and more difficult (therefore more dangerous) than a labor that started spontaneously. Instead of being impatient and taking castor oil, it would be wiser to rely on ultrasound scans in order to check that the amount of amniotic fluid is still normal. This is the best way to reassure the health professionals. Today we routinely offer mothers-to-be a great number of useless scans. We must realize that the most useful ones are those done 'on demand' when the pregnancy is longer than usual. -- Michel Odent, MD"

Don't do the castor oil thing! It can cause the baby to have a bowel movement before they're born, and then they can swallow some of their stool, which can be very dangerous.
Just wait...as uncomfortable as you are, being pregnant is so much easier than caring for a newborn around the clock...so rest while you can. Go out to dinner with your husband, go to the movies...the things you won't get to do for a long time.

look you're purely 2 days previous due, you may bypass yet another week or so. the toddler will come whilst this is waiting. you may ask for a membrane sweep once you're a pair of week late and for induction once you're approximately 10 days previous due (even with the reality that i does no longer advise this). My chum used castor oil and her toddler handed meconium interior her and he or she mandatory an emergency c-section and the toddler grew to become into in icu. So in case you want to doubtlessly harm or misery your toddler, bypass forward yet some greater days of waiting ought to no longer kill you, if certainty be told you should relish something at the same time as you may!

CASTOR OIL IS A LAXATIVE AND HAS NEVER BEEN PROVEN TO BE SAFE OR EFFECTIVE AT INDUCING LABOR. IT CAN PASS THE PLACENTA CAUSING THE BABY TO PASS MECONIUM (POOP) INSIDE PUTTING HIM/HER AT A HIGHER RISK OF INFECTION AND OTHER SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS!
Unless it is medically necessary to have a child early induction is not the safest route to go. Average first pregnancies are 41 weeks 1 day & pregnancies with prior births average 40 weeks 3 days… It is optimal to be patient and wait until your body & baby are ready. Intervention usually leads to more intervening, and having an induction can put you at a higher risk of having a cesarean section, something that despite being the most common surgery in the U.S. carries many, many risks.
Some safe ways to try to bring on labor at home are:
Walking. And especially up & down stairs sideways. This helps the baby navigate the pelvic bones and allows the baby to put pressure on your cervix aiding in dilation.
Squatting is also good, both before labor & during. Before labor you can do squats to strengthen your legs for long periods of squatting during labor as well as stretching the joints & muscles associated with squatting. It also helps the baby put pressure on the cervix. And during labor it can open your pelvis up to 33% more, allowing more room for the baby to squeeze out!
I have heard good things about red raspberry tea (drink it chilled, hot it is gross!) It is said to strengthen your uterus, thus causing your contractions to be more efficient.
Sex or more specifically semen and orgasm are said to help you to release more of the natural labor-inducing hormone Oxytocin. And Sperm/semen contain prostaglandins another substance that is synthetically produced and used to aid in dilation!
Nipple stimulation is also another way to get your body to produce Oxytocin, as well as help to toughen up your nipples for the task of breast feeding that lay ahead!
I hope this was helpful, a great book about labor & birth is:

I recommend it to all expectant parents!
