Ive been on rent.com looking at different apartments. I have been taking alot of people advise about the good neighborhoods. Can someone tell me about North Phoenix, or North West or East Phoenix, or those safe places. I hear Chandler is really good spot but a little more expensive. I was told to look for a Place in the East valley, and to stay away from places like Mesa, Glendale and central Phoenix.

Basically, the East Valley, although very nice, will be terribly expensive. I would definitely stay away from South Phoenix. Most other places in Phoenix are pretty decent. Tempe is kind of a "College Town", but not horribly bad. Chandler is nice, but also on the more expensive side. Places in the West Valley such as Peoria, Glendale (which is not really bad at all, but it does have its older, rougher parts), Surprise (Which is new and very nice. It has even been dubbed as the "New Scottsdale!!), Litchfield Park, and Goodyear are all pretty much new and affordable.

I would recommend you move to northern Arizona and not in the Valley of the Sun. There is an illegal population element that has risen over the years and the problems with the teens of that element are destroying the great city with the violence and trouble in the schools. Prescott, and Flagstaff are more safe and are small towns with big appeal. You can raise children there and not be worried about gangs and the transients that come through the cities during the winter months and stay until they are harrassed by police, before moving elsewhere close by. There's beautiful Sedona in between the two towns that you would love to see with Red Rock Crossing, and Slide Rock for recreation. You won't have the severe heat in summer in Prescott or Flagstaff, and you'll even see snow in the winter sometimes. They have the perfect small town feel and are perfect for raising a family. And it's not that long of a drive to the big city of Phoenix to do major shopping.

Some parts of Mesa aren't bad (I live in a nicer area). Try looking at Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe and anything between the US 60 and the Loop 202. Ahwatukee is also really nice but very expensive.

I noticed the person above me mentioned Ahwatukee. Well that is what I was going to say because that is where I live. I love it. It is not much more expensive than the surrounding areas if you are going to rent. And the area is so nice. I would highly recommend it.

North and East Phoenix are pretty tough areas, try somewhere else if you can afford it.

Start at where you will be working and expand outward. Traffic in Phoenix is horrible, do yourself a favor and live close to work.
