I have heard it's a good way to see Norway.

How long does the trip take? How often does it run? How much does it cost (are there various classes of fares)? Should I pre-buy a ticket before I get there?

It's about a 7 hour train ride, nonstop.
Tomorrow's schedule (which could change or be different on different days) has trains leaving oslo at:
6:35, 8:11, 10:33, 16:07, and 23:11
These trains arrive in Bergen 6.5-7.5 hrs. later.

You might not see much on the night train unless it's summer, you'll have light almost all night.

acc. to raileurope.com it costs $131 one way,
2nd class. Probably a couchette would be $27 more for the night train, but you'd save on a hotel.
You should prebuy the ticket in Oslo at least a day before departure. On the same day you can buy it, too if the train is not full, but if you're not going to be in europe a day or two before the train ride, you may want to buy it online (raileurope.com)

For train schedules in Europe, also check bahn.de,
the site for German Rail
or
oebb.at,
the austrian equivalent.
Find English if no German, then search all over europe. OEBB's site is quicker.

I see I was too late, but the first and second answer tells you all you need to know. Remember to check out "FLØIBANEN!", that is a ride up to the mountain with a great view over Bergen Town, Also try to go to "HULEN" on a concert if there is any, well worth a trip. They also got a great sea aquarium there, and lots of great pubs, expensive, but great! Hope you enjoy your trip, peace and love from Telemark in Norway
