I've been thinking about writing some short stories. would it be cool if i wrote about some of the things that have happened to me, but use different characters/names? Or should i go with some off the wall ideas i have? Which kind of story do you like best (probably no horror). Thanks for your help!!

Write about your own experiences. That way it will be easy to create your own characters.

Use stories that you know ... that is what most of the greatest artists have done, from John Steinbeck to Anne Rice and Stephen King ... they write about places and people they know about, just changing some of the settings (time and place), changing the names and also exaggerating some of the stories to make them more intense and wild. Always try to write about what you know the most, and realize in doing this that your audience doesn't know about those things, so they will be fascinated.

people like off the wall better, usually becuse it gives them more of something to think about, we all have our own lives to contemplate, but both are good story ideas.
