There is a civic election this fall in my city. The constituency I currently reside in is an open seat, as the incumbent is retiring. Should I go for it & run? I'm 24 & would be doing it for all the right reasons. I feel governments in general have become very inefficient in dealing with the real issues on any level. Would running help to tackle this problem or would I be wasting my time?

You sound to me as if you're just the sort of person needed in local government: concerned and involved. Even if you don't win, you might consider continuing to attend the meetings. This can give you a voice nearly equal to that of a council member, as well as gaining you support for a later run. Most of all, it makes your views heard on a regular basis, which gives you a lot of influence in local government.

Back in my home town, one of the strongest forces in the current way of life is a man who refused to run for a council seat -- but he attended over 95% of the meetings for at least 10 years. By the time I first appeared in a meeting (at age 15), the council had developed the habit of asking for his opinion on virtually every topic (he usually gave them one first). he didn't want the council vote. In fact, his most prevalent complaint was that the other 1200 registered voters *weren't* there -- and to heck with their views if they couldn't bother to show up when the right stuff was on the agenda.

My advice to you is - GO FOR IT! My husband is also a young politician and there is no better time than to get started - Go in young and retire from office positions.. Here (in the city I live in) we have a Commissioner who is 23 and he is pretty good - he recently pissed some people off but at the same time - he made several others happy - it's all part of the game! Good luck to you! But know - running for positions becomes very expensive - you should consider (if not already) joining a party to help with the cost and to gain more supporters. :)

Run. If you have some solutions to the "problems" you refer to, then by all means have your say. At least you will be heard during the campaign, even if you do not win. It is always a possible to win. However, I hope you are very much more definitive about the wrongs than you are in your stated question here.

Chow!!

This nation is one of the few in the world where it's citizens have the opportunity to mold the civic future. If you feel strongly about it go for it! Take advantage of this precious privelage afforded by this great, although flawed nation.

If you think you have something to offer your city, go for it. There's three ways to honorably serve this country, Vote, Defend her, and participate in government and contribute. I say go for it.
