if they possessed technology capable of interstellar travel in a reasonable amount of time. We are so screwed. They could easily wipe us out without much effort then. Besides we could only defend. we could never attack them since 1) we have no means of interstellar travel. 2) they would have no mercy on an alien species. (do you pity the slain whale? the cow? the frog? the common cockroach?)

Easy answer:
Yes.
We will more likely unite to fight against a common enemy, on this case aliens from another world.
Now, chances to survive an attack from a technologically advanced species that are capable to travel through space and have the power to attack us too, are about 1 against 1 million.
But if we actually survive and win, then “make no mistake” as our president once said… there will always be someone or a nation or a group of people that will take advantage of the situation and try to take over.
Why? Because is in our DNA. Is embedded in us humans. We want power and control, and we will always be looking for ways to achieve it.
If you are smart, stay away from war, and when the time comes, join forces with those who won. And start making money out of it. And then run and hide, as nobody stays at the top forever… not even aliens.

I would say that the unification of the worlds people against a common enemy is entirely possible as long as the Commander in Chief is an American, all of the soldiers wear the same clothes, and eat Bacon and Eggs for breakfast, Southern Style Bar-B-Qued Pork with Cold Slaw for Lunch, and Fried Ham and Collard Greens for supper. Frontline troops would be a mixed bag of males and females fighting together, side by side, with male and female officers.
I can visualize the American Commander being Hillary Clinton.

I dont think that mankind would unite. This is very sad, but true. We would all run around in panic blaming the leaders of society like we do for everything else. This day and age is not a day of heroes, so I doubt that anyone average would stand up and take the lead to fight these guys. World peace is impossible unless we all unite.

I'm reminded of a passage in "The War of the Worlds" by HG Wells, in which an acqaintance of the protagonist offers the opinion that some people would become pets of the invaders and help hunt other people. When met with doubt, his rebuttal was something like "There's some would do it cheerful !" Depressing, but true. Most wouldn't, but just like in this particular story, any counter-attack by humans would probably be short-lived and of little effect. But of all the possible rotten finishes for the human race, I would guess that annihilation by aliens is one of the less likely ones.

One is, yes we unite to fight a common enemy, casting our differences aside. (this is if the aliens try to exterminate us)
Two is, No some of us would submit to the other beings as high life forms, and co-operate(worship). This would cause a large proportion of the rest of us to resist both the aliens and the people who support the aliens.
Then again if they come to 'help' well that a whole new ball game.
If they come for malicious purposes, they'll come for the water or the sun. It the most valuable assests we have. We will be like locusts or ants to them and I believe be largely ignored by aliens.

There's a terrific episode ot the original "Outer Limits" called "The Architects of Fear," which addresses just this question. One would have thought that mankind would have united against the nazis, but alas, even in the face of such a brutal enemy there were those who joined the enemy's side.

Watch Independence Day! The Movie. I think its a pretty accurate depiction of mankind under just those circumstances!
Here is a link where you can review the movie. I watch it every July 4Th. Enjoy. :) / the Fourth of July, the day America celebrates its Indepdence Day and a new power has surfaced hovering overhead the mighty cities of America and the world. Aliens arrive in many vast spaceships but bring absolute silence with no message or hint of their intentions (quite remiscent of the V television saga from the 80's). That is until the day that all hell lets loose in Washington DC.
One scientist comes to the conclusion that the Alien vessels above are sychronizing for a major attack. The order to evacuate Washington DC comes just as a Helicopter sent to welcome the Aliens with lights is shot down. The President barely escapes in Airforce one as the Whitehouse is decimated. America promptly sends its Airforces to the skies to combat the giant ships overhead. As F-15's approach, a series of smaller crafts are released. These crafts have superb maneuverability and shields to protect from all but direct hits. America's elite pilots are all shot down, except a single pilot as played by Will Smith. He goes into a dive into a cannon with two Alien ships on his tail. They crash because of poor navigation but, his plane has to set down as well. The human pilot then promptly heads to the crashed Alien ship watches the hatch open and promptly.....
Love that movie!

I doubt if all the countries would work together. They might make a plan on how to fight them together, but each country would most likely fight separately and work towards the same goal, but ultimately still have their differences.

I would think we would, we all fight for survival. If all of humanity faced death, to put aside our differences and stand united, if even for a last stand, would seem the most logical choice.
