I got my cell phone when I was about 15 or 16,started driving, and got my first job. My dad wanted to make sure he was able to contact me in case something ever happened

I think the best age is when you can afford to pay the bill yourself and not have to put it off on your parents. Phone bills can get pretty expensive.

I do think 12 is a little young, but things are constantly changing. The other day where I worked I saw what looked to be an 8 year old with a little pink cell phone of her own. Heh, it was nicer than mine. It's a little crazy, but if parents wish to spoil their kids, that's their business.

I think the right age is when you are going out on your own a lot without parents. When you start going out with just you and your friends i think it starts to become necessary to have a phone. That way if something were to happen you had a way to call parents or other help. Also its a way for your parents to keep tabs on where you are and what you are doing.

In our family, none of my children got a cell phone until they were 18 and had a job to pay for it themselves.
