It is and it isn't. My friend has a very sweet pit bull and I would hate to see her taken away, but pit bulls can do a lot of damage. My dog and I were attacked by two lose ones a few months ago. It was their owner's fault, but my dog still got a heavy beating. His tall, agile figure is probably what saved him.

I think pit bulls should be allowed if they are friendly, but measures should be taken against those who pose as a threat to people and animals in the community. Maybe even have something similar to a liscense to owning one.

The ban is rediculous, but not doing anything is rediculous, too. Their form of 'play' can even be deadly to smaller dogs or children, because they don't know their own strength. Owners should be well educated before bringing home a pit bull.

Don't get me wrong. I love the breed and it has such an important history to humans, but in the ownership of a careless person, they can get out of hand.

There is a ban on pit bulls? Where?

Either way, I do NOT think it is ridiculous.... at least, not completely. Obviously it is not the dogs' fault, but the fact is that most people simply are not smart enough and responsible enough to raise a dog of that nature. I do not think they should be banned, but they SHOULD be regulated. If you can't prove you know how to raise one right, then you shouldn't have one. Raised right, they are gentle and bright. Raised incorrectly, they are a danger to innocent people, especially children. It is not the dogs' fault, rather the ignorant owners, but there it is. The fact is that a schnauzer or pug is less likely to kill someone than a pit bull that's been raised by in idiot. You can argue otherwise, but fatality statistics don't lie.

If you can breed a dog to be nice, you can also breed them to be nasty.

If you believe that some breeds of dogs make better pets, are easier to train, are smarter or can herd sheep better, then you also have to believe some breeds of dogs make bad pets, are hard to train, are dumber and have a nasty disposition.

When you look at the statistics, those dogs in the "pit bull" group have the highest number of incidents of bites and deaths. If you need such an animal as a guard dog, fine. But around small children they are nothing but a gun waiting to go off.

The best collection of these statistics is in the Clifton study. These cover from SEPT 1982 to NOV 2006. (Reference below) The pit bull terrier has the highest number of attacks on children and adults. The pit bull terrier also has the highest number of deaths and maiming.

Considering the reason these dogs were bred in the first place and that reason no longer exists, there is no reason to keep such an animal. IMO if you have one of these dogs and they bite a kid, you had better have a ton of insurance to cover as you WILL get sued.

A ban on Pit-Bulls is ridiculous. A Pit is a GOOD dog (with certain traits to be aware of, sure. nowhere near as naturally vicious as a red or blue heeler). What would make more sense is a ban on the people who raise Pit's improperly....probably the same kind of people who'd abuse children... sense that's what a dog is tantamount to... a childrens!

What is the ban about? Where are they banning? In a certain city or state. Are they banning breeding or owning?

This is a concern, I am very interested in this.

Pit bulls have been bred to be vicious. owning pit bulls shouldn't be illegal but there should be stricter breeding regulations so that they naturally have a better disposition.

I think it is. Too bad so many idiots train them to be so over aggressive and mean! They are nice dogs if trained properly just like any other breed. But now America is scared of them because of ignorant people who ruin the dogs life by treating them the way they do and training them to attack.

Me, the ban should be on people treating the dogs like they do.

I do. A friend of mine had one and she was a very gentle dog. They need to go after those who train the dogs to fight. The dogs that attack are only doing what they have been taught which is not their fault.
