Yesterday I accidentally put the wrong kind of motor oil in my car. I also didnt realize that I put WAY TOO MUCH into it as well. I was driving for about 2 minutes and it began to smoke. We drained the oil and put the right kind and amount into it. On my way home it was smoking a little bit. Is that just from the left over oil or from it being too full? Its running fine now I am just worried about the occasional puff of smoke.

Like everyone else says you did good.. (my exwife would have driven it all over town and then told me at dinner 'oh.. byt the way the car's engine blew out thru the hood for some reason, dear' )

The smoke is prob. just spilt oil burnng off the hot metal. Gve it a day or two and it should be gone.

If you used MOTOR oil both times you will be ok.... if you used some other kind of oil the first time, you may want to change the oil AGAIN in a week or so... just to remove the residual oil. Don't forget to change the filter as it holds a few cups of oil all by itself.

Again... nice job of dealing with it so quickly....

You didn't write what kind of oil you originally put in. Not all OIL are oil of same function. Transmission oil are really hydraulic (pressure) oil. Motor oils are combination of gear oil and other additive. Manual transmission oil are mostly gear oil.

So motor oil are mostly meant for lubrication (and corrosion inhibitors + sludge build up fighter).

In general, what ever damage you did is already done and you can't do nothing about it. Given you've already flushed it out (or just removed the excess amount), all you can do is wait and see. But in my experience having little too much oil (like 1 extra quart) is not a long term problem.

It's from being over filled. Your car should be fine, and the smoke should clear up after driving a short while. This happens quite often. Should not be a problem for you.

take it to a shop and ask for a crankcase cleaning... they have a special additive that they will put in with your engine oil and then they will run your car for about 20 minutes... the additive will dissolve the burnt and sludgy oil and will drain it out... then you can start all over with the right kind of oil..

Since you only ran the car a few minutes, and then fixed the problem...you should be fine.
It'll take a while to burn off all the residual oil. At least you noticed...that saved you from a HUGE repair!!

I think you did good and shouldn't worry, honestly.
