ok so... i am going to college in the fall and will be staying at home (I live 10 minutes from the campus). I am going to get a mac, however i cant figure out whether i should get the macbook (laptop) or the imac (desktop, which, doesnt even look like one because the entire computer is just simply the flat screen monitor, thus space would not be an issue). I really dont want a laptop because I think that they are stolen and broken easily, however, I was wondering if the portability of the laptop is really as necessary as they say it is in college... or will i be fine with a desktop at home?

I'll recommend a laptop... apart from the portability at home, u'll be able to go to classes with it and because they are easy to move around, it is easy for you to get softwares and all on it from friends and from school....

Its totally left to u but i bought a laptop when i was in college and i didnt regret it.

Good luck.

Although I'm fondly against Macs, you should go with the laptop. I use mine everywhere. I do my school work on it at school (and at home, without transfering files or typing hand-written notes), I do my work on it, I create the powerpoint presentations for my church on it anytime I want then I take it into church to actually use those presenations. All this without having to carry around a notebook or having to transfer files. Laptops these days are built with a GPS locator is them that can be activated when stolen. You can't even opt out of it, it's required by law (as of 2006 I believe). If you get a good case for it and take good care of it (maybe even being overly protective) you'll never have to worry about breaking it.

What I did was to use a laptop. I didn't always take it with me, but when i did I was very careful not to let it out of my sight. You can put lots of passwords and other protection on it so your info is safe, but to loose all that info can be devastating. So if you feel like you need to use an iMac, consider this...
If you want to take notes digitally, get a cheap PDA with a keyboard (full size, not a thumb-board), and take notes on that, then sync it with your mac when you get home.
The portability is nice, but you can substitute most of it with other, cheaper items (like an iPod or PDA). However if you need to process complicated things, it might be worth having a laptop so you don't have to go home all the time to do it.

If you are a fast type you could take your notes on your laptop. Otherwise no, you don't really need it with you when I went to college the college provided us with computers to type our papers on campus.
