Demands? I've never before seen or even heard of that happening . . . at any restaurant!
However, to answer your main question, if someone does something for you while you're there -- brings/refills your drink, clears your table, etc. leave a tip . . . smaller than in a regular service restaurant, but leave a tip.

Really the waiters and waitress at a Buffet get paid just as little as a waiter or waitress at a different restaurant, which is VERY LITTLE. They can do this because tips are calculated to be part of their earnings. So they need the tips just as much as they do elsewhere.
And they work for them too, just in ways that aren't as obvious as other restuarants. Along with getting your drinks, they have to keep the place clean and ensure there is food out there for you to serve yourself. A lot of times at these sort of places, the waiters and waitress are also involved in cleaning dishes and seating people. Yet they still get the crappy pay of a waiter/waitress.

I have never heard of a waiter or waitress demanding a tip. If they did that, I'd tell them their demand simply proves that I shouldn't be giving them one in the first place.
When I do go to buffets though, I still usually give a $2 or $3 tip for them clearing plates and getting drinks, but not usually any more than that.

LOl if a tip is demanded than of course none is given. I do leave a tip if the service was good. You may "get" your own food but someone has to clear the used plates and keep the coffee/drinks coming. If the plates are piled high and table sloppy when I come back with yet another plate of food than I would be incline not to leave a tip. I guess it is a matter of preference. I tip for good service not for the sake of tipping. Bonn Appetite

Girl no if you are eating buffet style who is waiting on you, you are waiting on yourself. The only time i leave a tip that is buffet style is if the waiter or waitress or supplying our drinks, and comes and checks on us to make sure that we are okay. But if it is buffet where you pay for you food, serve yourself and get your on drinks. That is the reason that it is buffet so they want have to fool with you. Don't leave no tip if it is like that not unless you are tipping yourself.

You have to remember this is there style of living, by our tips. In a buffet style eating experience it's not included but it's always nice to leave a tip one way or another.

Interesting delima. Many times you pay 1st. Do all the work getting your food plates extra knives and forks and drinks sometimes yet there is a server that comes by. Ah a buck a person might not be so bad.

I guess it depends on the degree of service. Some places you get your own beverage and no one actually "waits" on you so there is little to no service there, if the server waits on you in every other way than you selecting your own food, then a tip is probably appropriate.
