The radio is like MTV's little cousin. They play whatever they play. (Well, whatever music MTV still does play.) And most modern bands are alternative, so that's what they're going to play. And plus, MTV and the radio team up to try to make sure people here a "hit" song. They play the same things over and over, recycled garbage.

It all comes down to who is listening. Ultimately, not enough people are listening to what you like. It is not a reflection on you or the music, but just the tastes of the general public. Considering that radios make their money from advertising, which is based on how many people are listening, until more people are interested in hearing what you like, the radio is going to react as it has. Support the radio stations that play stuff you like. Buy the music you like to increase their sales. Don't support the rest. That is about all you can do.

Corporate ownership of radio stations and poor music promotion by the labels.
The corps want to play what will get the most listeners because they want the biggest market share because that pays the most ad revenue.
The same goes for the music labels. What sucks most about the music labels is that they are not even putting out good music anymore.

Because most people nowadays are listening to "rap" music and if most people are listening to that then "most" of the radio stations will play that plus there not playing any good bands on the radio right now

Consider the current musical climate:
We're churning out vapid American Idol winners & that's what America is eating up at the moment. (for some reason)
Rock bands are in a tough place right now & you either have to sound like one of 2 dozen Fall Out Boys or go pop.

Most of the music on the radio is either in Spanish or targeted towards inner-city punks... people without money.
Most people who like Rock and Roll are more mature now and can afford a CD player, satellite radio subscription or can download music online. Each offers superior audio quality without commercials.

Ignore the radio. Just listen to whatever you own on vinyl or cd. You'll never hear anything good on the radio.

you answered your own question. the main reason is that other genres, such as hip hop and alternative music, are generating more in sales than rock and roll.
