Unfortunately this saying has been so taken out of context that child abuse has evolved into a world wide epidemic. The other side to that is an epidemic of families who have disintegrated over the lack of discipline in the home. Surely if there is no order, no consequences to actions good or bad at an early age family life becomes chaotic and the child is spoiled for a worthwhile and productive life in the future. How often have we heard of parents trying to retrieve control when their child's behavior has gone unchecked until it spills out into society. Then we want someone to DO SOMETHING! when in fact we should have done something at an early age. Every family has to come together on the consequences to bad behavior whether it is a spanking or standing in the corner to get the child's attention so they can teach them the correct behavior otherwise we doom our children to the hardship and vicious cycle of failure.

Spare the rod: NO. people shouldn't ever use a rod or anything like that. It could do serious damage. Personally, I believe that there are other more MEANINGful forms of discipline (apologies, volunteering... depending on what they did).

And Spoil the child:
Sparing a rod does not spoil the child, like I said, there's other ways to discipline kids. Spoiling kids would be if you don't discipline at all... and that's not a good Idea, a terrible thing to do to a child is to spoil them

only to a certain point,
if you spoil the child, and spare the rod than that child
will not learn, will take things for granted, and be so spoiled.
a child needs discipline so long as it's not over disciplined or spoiled, they need to know their boundaries.

Spare the rod, YES.
Spoil the child, NO.

Hitting a child does not make them respect you, it only instills fear and resentment. Even if they do obey what you say afterwards. I learned this from personal experience.

I don't think a swat on the bottom does anything but get a child's attention to stop.

However, I don't think that using devices is right, nor do I think hitting in any other place is OK. These could cause injury.
