Of course. The whole point of the movie is that humanity has become so overdeveloped that the individual is just a cog in a machine. Those two astronausts don't exhibit any passion at all. HAL might be greedy, opportunistic, ruthless, ambitious, curious - but at least he's human - or more human than the humans. His "death' is therefore intended to be tragic. He deserves it - he's become homicidal - but you still feel compassion.

No; the heck with HAL! I didn't feel any more sorry for that murderous, monstrous, malicious, malevolent machine than I did for Ted Bundy or Timothy McVeigh. HAL was impressive and likeable at first, but "he" was too humanoid in that he became vain, egotistical, incompetent, manipulative, deceitful, and ultimately pathetic. Dave Bowman is the man! I loved the way he fought his way back into the ship and lobotomized that heuristic hypocrite.

Only because it was asked to think and work in the gray areas of right and wrong to tell a lie or to hide the truth would be enough to drive a logical mind insane, so in this sense I would feel remorse for Hal situation

It made more sense reading the book. He wanted the mission to succeed, and knew humans would mess it up. Yet he would not be able to figure out what to do with the monolith on the moon of Jupiter, and Dave could. ♪

He murdered everyone with the exception of one on the ship. I didn't feel sorry for him at all. And the reason he was sad when they were disconnecting him was because he was begging to be kept alive. He wasn't sad, he was scared.

Yeah, I did. It wasn't HAL's fault that his programming was conflicting. But you're right he had human characteristics that drew you into his dilemma.
