Relatives may buy these types of expensive gifts for the kids because their parents cannot afford them.

Bragging doesn't mean they actually HAVE the item - - now I wonder you said poor kids - why did you call them poor? It is because of the fact they were bad clothing, get free lunches, haven't got the correct school supplies? Sounds like to me their parents spend money on the wrong things - which also creates a cycle of being poor. While your parents are focusing on the right things - which means you will be given a good education , a good home and will grow up well adjusted and have a nice job and then you can buy the things YOU desire.

Be a mature kid and try to understand your mom's situation; if she says she doesn't have money - she means it really. Don't make it tough for her.

I lived all my childhood (I'm 24 now quite grown up) without many of these things you mentioned -watching my friends enjoy them. But I knew my mom wasn't really rich and I didn't wanted to force her. But see what, I enjoy all that now that I'm on my own feet, spending money and all. My mom's just too happy for that even though it may seem I have outlived all that which really is not.

I remember I was 10 or something and wanted a video game and my family condition was not good back then; but Mom bought it for me on my birthday and it was like, "I didn't wanted it to break their banks like that" - but she was overwhelmed she wanted me to keep it. I cried that day really.

A smart advice would be to get a part-time job and try to earn your laptop!

Believe me, I have a laptop today and I hardly use it - all that's fad! Try to learn some new things on the Internet e.g. play online computer games at superarcade.com; learn new arts, foreign languages, computer programs such as C, Web designing etc. Try to get good grades in school, if you are into Sports - Enjoy.

Whatever it is, don't make your mom unhappy.

DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER!

There are many many many people in this world who have a lot of money but don't need to go around and flash it with material things. I honestly can't say that I am one of them, due to the fact that I worked many many years to get where I am today and I enjoy the fine things life has to offer. But I am an adult, you seem to be a kid who is whining about keeping up with the Jones'.

Maybe their priorities are all screwed up where flashy new electronics are more important than basic necessities like new clothes and shoes.

Maybe they are in the same boat as you, but your mom has the foresight to see what's really important. By next year, these technological toys will be obsolete and by then, maybe you can get the newer ones.

Perhaps their parents live on credit cards.
