Home Depot - no question. Their customer service is awesome. The staff there actually take you to the right ailse and help you find what you are looking for - they even offer suggestions if you explain your project. At Lowes, I usually get a blank stare from the associates when you ask a question.

There are a number of regional and one-off places. Menard's is another big box in the upper Midwest. 84 Lumber is a lumber and building supply place HQ in western PA, and there are local examples of Ace, Trustworthy, True Value, and Do-It Best with small and large stores. I've lost track of others such as Furrow, HQ, Builder's Square, etc. that may have gone under in the last 10 years, or just pulled out of my local market.

Lowe's, I think they provide better service and the products are just as good if not better than home depot. And at Lowe's you deal with real LIVE people and not some stupid computer self serve check out.

then second choice menards 8 miles from my home
as a last resort i'll go to home depot .5 miles from my home
