Do a Google search for 'Podsafe music' you'll find hundreds of sites with songs from independent bands you can download for free legally. If it's the major label artists you want you'll have to pay if you want to get it legally from a service such as iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody or walmart.com.

You can get them for free with a P2P or share program (other people mentioned some of them), but those programs always bring some spyware and sometimes viruses. If you decide to do that be aware that is not as beautiful as it seems. your computer may get slower or a lot of pop-ups will come to you.

There are known that I know of. The only way is downloading a music program(ares, limewire) which I don't recommend considering it's illegal.
