I know how the Biology behind getting brown eyes works, but here's what Im trying to figure out, how far down the lines can blue eyes be passed down. Heres the story, I have brown eyes my husband is green - and our baby is crystal blue. I will give you some background info and tell me if you can find this at all to be possible..

Myself brown
My mother brown
My father brown
Maternal Grandparents brown
Paternal Grandparents brown
Great maternal Grandparents unknown
Great paternal Grandparents male:brown female: blue

Husband carries a blue gene ( father mother both blue, he's green)

How can I have given my son a blue gene - can it be carred down from my father grandmother ( my great grandmother) and what are the odds?

Thanks!

Yes, it is possible. Also, most young babies have blue eyes, they usually change at about 1 year.

Hypothetically, Adam and eve could have had blue eyes and it could be passed on from them. Now that is an exageration, but it would be possible. Genes could stay in a family forever, jsut generally their nudged out after a period of time. The odds arn't very good, but we obviously have a blue eyed baby to prove it!

If his eyes remain blue here is the genetics broke down for you

B = brown eyes (dominant over blue/green)
b = blue/green eyes (recessive to brown)

Husband = bb (if his eyes are green this is the only way it can happen)

You = Bb

There for your possibilities of having a blue eyed child are 1 in 2.

because here are the possible traits for your children

Bb or bb. That is the only way it is possible. Meaning that in your genetics there is a trait for blue eyes although no one shows this trait.

The gene for brown eyes is dominant to blue. So you have probably inherited a gene for blue eyes from one of your parents, and it's this gene that you have passed to your son.

Sometimes you need two copies of a gene in order to show that characteristic, other times, if you just have one copy and it's the dominant gene, that's the characteristic you will show. Genetics are complex, and traits can run in families for generations before they actually show up in someone.

Eye colour is multi-factorial. You, and your entire family, could be carrying a blue-eye gene and not be displaying it. In your family, if the brown eyes vary in darkness between individuals, say, if your mother has light brown eyes, then this would confirm the presence of blue eyes gene.

I think all newborns have blue eyes, the melanin that colours them slowly changes them. I've a friend that had a child with blue eyes that darkened (they had brown eyes). Not sure though. Anyone else?
