The word comes from Hamburg, Germany. The residents of the city are known as "hamburger" in German. A theory states that meatscraps, similiar to ground beef, were placed on a Brotchen, a round bun-shaped piece of bread. German immigrants brought the hamburger to the U.S.

They were supposedly invented in Hamburg,or German-Americans started them up as a trend and simply named them after Hamburg. I once had a Jewish boyfriend who wouldn't touch a hamburger, and he wasn't all that into kosher either - he just couldn't accept the idea there was no ham in it. So maybe the name is a German plot to keep Jews from eating all the burgers up. (*giggle*).
