The constitution in and of itself was written as a guideline, a guideline of basic rights that should be afforded to all whom dwell here. The rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness although culture has changed, technology has changed, and people have changed, the basic principles of freedom have not and that is what the constitution is about.

Because the ideals behind it have no bearing on the passage of time. Whether it's 1777 or 2007 the Constitution still holds relevence to the basic principles of liberty & democracy. People may feel that certian parts are "dated" such as the second amendment, but again they are there to protect the rights & freedoms of American citizens.

It protects your essential rights. It prohibits the government from abusing power, and sets up a system of checks and balances in order to protect the liberty of the governed. And liberty is an idea that trancends time.
Or if you think the government should have the power to invade your privacy and rights as the Patriot Act permits, then the constitution is a dead document.

the constitution created the framework for all future laws and policies to be modeled after. All laws in the US revolve around the amendments declared in the constitution. Even back then injustices were as common as nowadays and they included basic rules to prevent them from continuing. For example: their rules dictate; You can't hold a citizen without justifiable cause, you can't kill a man for complaining about the government, etc. Without the future sight our forefathers had we would be screwed.
