I watched it about 10 times but its beyond me. Its a great film

Donnie Darko was meant to be killed when the jet engine crashed into his room. The night he almost got hit, and didn't, started a tangent universe. It is inherently unstable, so Frank the Bunny came to him to tell him the world would end. Donnie has special supernatural powers to change things and prevent the end of the world. At the end, he goes through a worm hole to go back in time and get killed by the engine. This brought the world back to the correct universe so the world wouldn't end. Most characters are the manipulate living, who are meant to lead Donnie to the correct path, self sacrifice. His girlfriend and Frank the Bunny are the manipulated dead. They can come back from the dead to send messages to him. Watch it again with this knowledge and it will become a whole new movie to you.

It is about a boy who is saved by Frank, a bunny he sees. Since Frank saved him from dying, Donnie is still alive and meets Gretchen. Being with Donnie puts Gretchen in danger and Donnie blames himself for her death (aka the end of the world), so he goes back in time and instead of leaving when the jet engine falls, he stays and get killed by it. This is the ultimate sacrifice for Gretchen who is then saved. He would have rather died than see her die.

it is about sacrifice. it shows what the world would be like had donnie lived. with him living the motivational speech guy was arrested for child porn, and his girlfriend got killed. he dies so they can be safe.
Or so thats how it was explained to me... great movie though

Its about a kid who is really a ghost, the airplane engine killed him, but he was sleeping and didn't know he died.

I tried to watch that movie but it was so mind numbingly boring my eyes started to tear...seriously I had to change the channel.
