It's true. My cousin did some research on my family tree. And that's how we found out about the baby and bath water. They had a tub for the whole family. First the Father gets a bath. Then it is the mother then the kids. Lastly babies were to bath. There are all kinds of weird terms. For example 200 years ago, your cats and dogs would be sleeping on the roof at night. So when it rains the cats and dogs would fall from the roof. That's where we get the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."

Maybe. But manipulation isn't always a bad thing. It depends on your definition. For me this saying reminds us to stop and think before we act. Spontaneity is good but leads to mistakes if it is never tempered by a bit of caution. It's also about sifting through the primeaval bucket of slime we all allow ourselves to wallow about in and identifying what is worth holding on to.

I just meant that
I just mean that we all manipulate each other. It doesn't have to be something scary. Do you believe that being asked to think before you act is always a bad thing? It can be. It depends whether it comes from someone who cares about you who just wants to continue using you.

In the old days, before general plumbing, a family would all use one tub of water to bathe. Husband first, wife, then kids according to age- thats why the term was made, the baby was last and by then the water was so dirty it was.... nasty

It works brilliantly as an idiom, precisely because it's not an OK thing to do. It illustrates its own point, without the need for rhetorical explanation. It's not manipulative, it's effective. It does the job perfectly. We say it in Italian too.

No, it's thought-provoking. It's meant to make us realise that although something might be only fit for throwing out, it may contain a valuable 'something' that needs to be retained, or rescued from the plug-hole!

I like Mr Punch. He threw the baby out of the window when Judy went to get the sausages, you know.
