Some good indie bands are Gone baby gone, Eyes Set To Kill, and Kiss kiss. Some other good bands are Bright eyes, though they're not really rock, System Of a Down, The White Stripes, and My Chemical Romance.

Hmmm, well. Rock and Indie has a wide range but here are a few bands I found and love. Some may be considered more metal.
Leo (saw these guys in concert with Breaking Ben)
Hourcast (kinda inbetween rock and metal)
Lacuna Coil (female vocalist with a male vocalist too)
Tacere' (From Finland, female and male vocals, melodic metal)
Ghost Machine (Very different variety in their music)
When November Falls (Singer and drummer of Cold)
Blue October (Just one of my newer favs)
Flee the Seen (one of the local bands here in KC that is getting bigger)
Hope I've given you some that you like! I love getting people into bands they haven't heard of or much of.

Check out the latest from Nine Inch Nails, "Year Zero". I recommend diving into the backdrop for the album first though. Go to NIN Year Zero Wiki and check out all the websites associated with the album. It's pretty cool.
