My Betta looks and seems to be acting normal, but I've noticed that his stomach is very very very big. I think it's because he can't sh*t, but if he couldn't, I think he would be dead already. So what's wrong with my betta? What should I do? He's a male.

If the scales are sticking out, this is a condition called dropsy. Rather than being a "disease" itself, it's a symptom of an underlying condition affecting the kidneys. This could be from poor water quality, bacterial infection, too much salt or medication in the water, a tumor, or other cause.

If the scales aren't sticking out (and you don't mention that they are), it may very well be just what you said - he's constipated. This is usually from feeding too much. You can give him a piece of a cooked pea with the skin removed - the extra fiber will help push things through. Cut back on the food a little - he should only be getting 3 betta pellets per feeding, no more than twice a day, and some bloodworms or daphnia for some variety in the diet. I feed my bettas a piece of a pea once a week for prevention.

If dropsy, see this link for treatment: http://www.fish-disease.net/diseases.htm

If the betta scales are sticking out and he resembles a pine cone than he probably has dropsy. I t is a nasty disease that can kill fish. I t can be caused by stress. I can be curable if it has not progressed to far. Go to fish geeks online and type of Dropsy. I t will tell you a you need to know. Good Luck!

it could be constipation. so you might be on to something. try to get him to eat greens like cook a pea and chop it up the size of a pellet. it usually helps if you hold it with tweezers by his head -- they don't always want to eat them. frozen krill will help get him regular again too.

stop feeding for a while though.
