In 1961, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were both trying to break the record for HR's in a season, which at the time was held by Babe Ruth. Both were neck and neck for most of the season until Mantle suffered an injury which kept him out for a little while. Because of the injury, Mantle fell short of the HR record and hit only 54 HR's. Maris though, broke the record and ended up hitting 61 HR's that year.

In home runs for a season, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees chased Babe Ruth's (also a Yankee) record of 60 home runs in a season. Mantle fell short with 54 home runs while Maris broke the record with 61. Unfortunately, Maris' record wasn't made official until the 1980's because Ford Frick, the baseball commissioner at the time, determined that Maris' record be separate from Ruth's because he took more games to get the record (the season was expanded sometime between the playing careers of Ruth and Maris).

Your question's a bit vague and could have a couple answers.
In 1961, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the Yankees were both on pace to break Ruth's single season mark of 60 home runs. However, Mantle was injured late in the season and Maris ended up being the one to break the mark.
Late in the 1960s, both Willie Mays and Hank Aaron looked capable of challenging Ruth's lifetime mark of 714. Neither did so in the 1960s, though Aaron finally did so in in 1974.

In 1961, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the Yankees were involved in the historic race of which you refer. Roger Maris eventually finished with 61 home runs to break the record, and Mantle despite being hurt late in the year wound up with 54. Needless to say, it helped the Yankees win 109 games while losing 53. They won the pennant by 8 full games over a very good Detroit Tigers team that finished 101-61.
Then Yankees then won the World Series in 5 games over Frank Robinson and the Cincinnati Reds.

1961, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. Maris hit 61 in 161 games and Mickey Mantle hit 54 in 153 games. There is a good movie called "61" starry Barry Pepper as Roger Maris and made by Billy Crystal that is worth watching.

1961 - Roger Maris vs. Mickey Mantle. Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's record by hitting 61 home runs. I don't remember exactly how many Mickey finished with but I think it was in the 50s somewhere.
