Changing one out is really easy to do yourself, a rebuilt altnernator costs about $115, so a shop will charge you around $180, but most shops want to put a new alternator rather than a rebuild, and they cost $200+...so, thats the ball park, it depends on what you get and labor charges.

An Alternator is not that expensive. A mechanic is going to charge you for the parts, at a marked up price, then he will charge you for labor. Now if the alternator is 80 bucks, and the mechanic charges 45 bucks per hour. You will be looking at about 250+. If you get some tools and do it yourself your looking at about 80 bucks. Your choice.

You can have that one rebuilt; but get a price first. You might even get a new one cheaper. Check on prices for re-manufactured and rebuilt. A reman has new windings, bearings, bushings, electronic goodies, and brushes. A rebuilt may have only the electronics, bushings, bearings, and brushes brand new. I prefer a reman. You will need an exchange with the latter two.

alternator's are relatively easy to change, go to the local junk yard pick one up for about $30-35. Disconnect your battery, loosen the belt (there is a nut attached to an elongated hole) remove the electrical plugs, take it out replace and reconnect. Tools needed a screwdriver and a ratchet set. Time about 30 minutes.

The actual cost to rebuild an alternator is areound $100 not counting labor. Why dont you call a repair shop and ask them?

Generally speaking, it's much cheaper and efficient to just get a rebuilt one at a parts store and replace it yourself. As a plus, they can test your old one, and make sure it's really bad.
Costwise, you're looking at anywhere from $50.00 to $300.00, depending on what was installed in your car. Typical seems to be around $120.00.

Difficult to answer without knowing what is wrong with it, best bet is get a rebuilt unit fitted that way you have a warranty if it goes wrong again in the next few months.Or take it to an auto electricians and see what they quote you to fix your unit.

It would be cheaper to replace the alternator with a new or remanufactured one than to try to have yours repaired. Go to Checker, Autozone or NAPA.
