I been in the same situation. You never know your friend might need the money for something else and the guitar isn't a big problem. I suggest you call your friend and tell them what happened. And ask him/her whats the best way you 2 can resolve the problem. Say it was an accident but you want to make things right.

the best thing that you can do is to talk to him about it and apologize, you will probably end up buying him another guitar around the price range of the broken one.
how did you break it and whats broken on it, before you buy him another one, look up a local guitar shop around your area and take it to them ask if theirs any way that it could be fixed and if so pay for the repair.
