Interesting that you have asked this, because I am adding a story about just this argument to a book on which I'm currently working; I have pondered long and hard:

Though both of these events are tragic, I have a difficult time comprehending anything worse than the taking of another life. Without delving deeply into the affects of these events religiously speaking (condemnation, karma, etc, depending upon one's belief system), the point that needs to be brought up, I believe, is the fact that death and killing is literally removing an individual from life itself - existence on this earth. That individual is gone: He or she won't be learning life's lessons any more, won't be able to possibly make the world a better place, and those who loved this person have had their lives irrevocably changed. The process of death is of course inevitable, but to hasten the process along would therefore seem to be the most unforgivable of sins - if a sin can be defined as an act that negatively affects the lives of those other than the individual himself or herself.

The loss of innocence, on the other hand, is a door through which we all must pass in our lives at some point, and some pass through it sooner than others, unfortunately, based upon their living conditions. Let's face it: we all have our protective barriers broken nearly every day in this day and age - the shooting of an innocent victim or victims in a school, rape, or simply learning about the atrocities going on in Iraq or other corners of the globe. We do, however, manage to get through it with the love and guidance of friends and family, professional help, etc along with our own set of values. The key point here I think is that though the events have a very negative affect upon our outlook, WE STILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECOVER FROM THE TRAUMA if we receive the right guidance or are able to assimilate the event into the overall composition of our psyche, and place it in perspective.

Example: Though I try not to be judgmental, I believe that those who take away the sexual innocence of a child are no better than pond scum, and should pay dearly for the offense. At the same time, that child, though scarred, has the chance to eventually heal his or her wounds, and realize that yes, there was an injustice done, but he or she still has the opportunity to realize that their life is not contingent upon the actions of that pervert or perverts that violated them and stole them of their innocence. Their body may have been violated, for certain, but at the same time they still have their minds, the rest of their life ahead, and hopefully the hope and faith that tells them that they can - and should - move on to a happier life by leaving their pass behind - a difficult though not impossible task. They still have the opportunity to minimize the damage to themselves and have full and productive life.

If that same individual is killed, what then?

Taking a childs innocence. A child can only be a child for a short time and it would be wrong to take it away from them so early. Taking someones life is bad but when I hear "taking a childs innocence" I think "child molestors" and child molestors are the lowest scum on the earth.

To me it's about the same because taking a child's innocence ruins their life so maybe that is worse. It would depend on the life that you took.

Good question. I would have to say taking a child's innocence because you have in essence killed a large part of them but they have to go live with it each day of their life.

Taking a child's innocence is far worse. I will kill someone or several people for such atrocities regarding my children, in a heart beat.

Taking someones life, hands down. Every child has to lose their innocence at some time or the other.

I say taking a child's innocence. They have their whole life ahead of them with a blight on their soul. And more times than not, they end up as screwed up adults.
