The speed from the modem to the ISP will still be 768 Kbps. You'll be able to reach your router at a higher speed but it will still have to slow down to the speed of your ISP connection. Where you'll notice an improvement is file transfer between your PCs local to the router (i.e. if you have all your music on PC1 and access it from PC2, you can transfer files at the speed of your router - likely 54 Mbps depending on the wireless specification you are using).

An analogy to use would be like saying you have a two lane road from your modem to the ISP. You could build a super highway from your computers through the router and to the modem, but you're still hitting the two lane road to get to the Internet.

The router cannot communicate any faster than your current line speed. If your connection is 768k, that's the best you'll get unless you upgrade your connection speed to something higher. If both machines are in use at the same time and have active sessions, the available bandwith will be more or less shared equally.

The router will divid the bandwidth evenly between the computers that are connected to it. A router will never speed you up, but can slow you down.

You can't get anymore bandwidth than your ISP allows. Legally.
