Every team has their group of true, dedicated fans. They are the ones that don't use the "F" word towards opposing fans, don't use their degree of public drunkeness as an excuse to abuse opposing fans and players, don't wear "fake jerseys" that don't even reflect the true team's spirit, they do not sport stupid tattoos with their team's logos on them (what if the Angels moved to Anchorage or Yankees moved to New Mexico?????) and don't over decorate their cars or houses with team logos (see Oakland A's and Raider fans.....), like the teams really give a damn about how much schwag you own with their symbols.....
The Red Sox fans are true to their teams, stay till the last out, have a cool stadium, are blue collar, hard working, American Dream living good people, and have a true rivalry (AL East vs. AL East..... NY Yankees). I'm a "true" SF Giants fan that is all of the above and respects all opposing fans.
Only thing that irritates me is when I go to the Oakland A's games and they think that they own the sport of baseball. Gang mentality rules there because if you're wearing other team's colors, they will verbally and physically abuse you. I've seen A's fans actually urinate on opposing team's fans in the bathroom. Their fake jerseys with "510" (area code of Oakland), abusive fans and people banging their stupid drums is distracting, irritating and take away from what true baseball was in the 70's and 80's at the coliseum, and not trying too hard to copy baseball in Japan with silly crap.

As for the Angels you have to realize that Southern California has a lot of transplants from the Northeast and Mid-west( myself among them) and these people brought their sports loyalties with them ( i.e. Yankees, Red Sox Cubs etc). Furthermore the last two decades have seen a migration from Los Angeles County which is solidly Dodgers country.
As for the A's, you have to realize that they reside in the shadow of the San Francisco Giants. Furthermore the A's have gone long stretches where they have not been competitive and these times have shaken off a lot of fans.

Biggest reason, other than how long Boston and New York have had a team, is proximity to other clubs. In california the loyalties of one state is divided amongst a handful of teams. If the only two teams in CA were the A's and Angels, they would have a bigger following. There are too many teams to root for in one area. Dodgers - Giants - Padres -

they just don't have the history behind them. the teams with the loyalist fans are the ones who have been around the longest like the sox, cubbies, and yanks. Also teams like the braves that have national broadcasts will gain loyalty. and success doesn't hurt either.
