Battery indicators are based on the measured open-circuit voltage, which is a very inaccurate way of measuring how much energy a battery has left.

For example, a battery can have a large internal resistance, which makes it almost useless, but still have a high open-circuit voltage which makes it look like it's still really good.

Because those indicators are not 100% accurate. What you are seeing is a bad reading, the battery probably was half empty to start with.

The indicator is reading what is known as surface voltage but since the battery is depleted there is no current to maintain the reading.
