Hi, i opened a spam message in my email, saying it was a greeting card. I didn't think and just opened it which i don't normally do if i don't know who it's from. Anyway, this greeting card wouldn't open, and then Norton came up saying a recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked, then it came up again saying a virus has been blocked and removed from your computer, i think the virus was called (download) it said the file had been removed. My computer played up for a while and my yahoo email page wouldn't respond so i tried to end it on task manager, but that wouldn't work so i had to switch it off myself on the button of the tower, i had to do this twice. It seems ok now but i was worried if i had done any damage to my computer even though Norton sorted it out.
Will everything be ok now do you think????

Nortons is not all that good with removing a virus or viruses. I would suggest that you be on the safe side and really make sure that a "Trojan Downloader", has really been removed from your computer. Please run what is know as "online scanner", Kerparsky Russia. Rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. The scanner will run direct from the servers of Kerparsky Russia. Run the complete scan, all viruses found will be destroyed in real time. Scan can take upto two hours depending on how many running processes and how many programs you have installed. After reboot your system. It is well worth the time and will not conflict with Nortons or any other antivirus software.

Was the email to Yahoo, or to Outlook on your computer? Either way, you need to delete the original person (if you haven't already) and make you you purge it. Just for good measure you want to purge your internet cache from IE / Firefox.
I have a site that will probably help you out, with extra education if nothing else as it seems you got away with it this time :)
It includes links, guides, reviews, screen grabs of interest and, more importantly screen by screen how to's to sort out infections. It also gives my contact details, through you (all) are free to just message me via here on Yahoo! Answers in you need help
http://www.spam-spyware.info
You might also want to consider SiteAdvisor from McAfee: It it free, though there is an enhanced pro version.
(It warns you whether a webpage or link is likely to be dodgy - before you get caught out)
http://www.siteadvisor.com
Trusted spyware products include:
Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Search&Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Sunblet Software's CounterSpy (15 day trial)
http://www.sunbelt-software.com
Despite other opinions, for a good anti-virus security suite,
Norton 360 is to be recommended (15 day trial available)
http://www.symantec.com
A list of other AV security companies is here:
http://www.ackadia.com/computer/computer-security/antivirus-companies.php
Edit / addenda:
Can't message you back as you have it turned off.
For spam there's a number of products and solutions, from putting your email through external mail filters/gateways like Spamassassin ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpamAssassin ) -
A number of Hosts / ISP's already offer this) - to third party filters like Mountain Softwares SpamEater Pro ( http://www.hms.com/spameater.asp )
Probably all overkill for you, but as a guide I get around 25,000 Spam a day (yes, really :( ) and maybe 1 or 2 get past the filters, and that's only because I let them.
You are doing OK, I think, but I suggest you add As-Aware and SiteAdvisor to your arsenal for good measure. They won't cause any problems with existing products.

You got a virus which norton said it blocked and yet your computer continued to play up as if it hadnt been blocked by norton. Well thats a huge shock to me....not! Go for kaspersky or Nod32, You cant beat them.

Yes probably! With norton installed you can feel safe, but i would recommend to run a few online scans from other leading antivirus softwares
Mcafee online scan
http://pcpitstop.com/freescan/FreeScan_EULA_Page.asp
Panda online scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm
F-Secure Online

If nothing is found, ur safe. Cheers

I think you are fine. Norton saved you. Just goes to prove how dangerous it can be to open any unsolicited mail.
