The answer to this questions is going to depend on which service, the terms of the agreement, and where you live. I will tell you that in the US, it is most likely that they told you upfront that it was X cost for X months. The terms of the agreement will likely say that it does not matter if you used the entire period, they will not refund to you what you have paid. If you are on a month to month automatic renewal, they likely do not have a minimum time you must stay with them--just call/email and cancel.
But, really, it depends on the terms of the agreement. This is why people should read everything before they sign/sign-up.

I don't really know but this lady told me that she had to change her credit card number and to advise them not to take any more charges from them . Because sometimes when you change just your card number they'll still run any charge that comes through to your new card number. I had to do this with AOL net service with American Express I like to have never got this straightened.out. You know you get so many free months when you buy a Dell , they'll tell you it is free but just give us a credit card number just in case you decide to keep our service, that is a untrue, they'll never stop billing your card and you can't get them on the phone. I don't know about anybody else but where I live they redialed every 1 minutes on AOL, you couldn't ever finish what you were doing without redial, redial. I got Cable Service and I love it , even though it cost a little more there is no dialing.
