There's really not a lot you can do to optimize a modem connection if you're running anything from Windows 2000 onwards. The OS' TCP/IP stack is already optimized for modem use.

The connection speed between you and the ISP will primarily be a function of line quality and the distance from your home to the telco's central office. The max speed is 56k but in the US is legally limited to 53k and is typically a lot slower than that.

The port speed for the port itself should be set as high as possible and in any case higher than the modem's maximum connect rate or data underruns will result. Most ports can be set at 128,000 bps and that's where you should set yours.

Dont worry too much about the internet speed. If you are using windows xp, probably you are getting the maximum speed which is available through your telephone line. Because xp will configure your modem performance automatically.
