If he really is OK with it, he needs to a signal booster or repeater to transmit further.

With that much distance, you'll need some sort of yagi or other directional antenna such as a "can-tenna" at each end to make the linkup. You'll also need a clear line-of-site between the two antannae.

A repeater WON'T help as it would need to be located about mid-way between the two houses, and a single repeater may not even be enough. The owners of the houses in between you would have to be willing to have the repeaters installed in their homes.

Google "cantenna" or "can-tenna" for some ideas on how you might make this work.

Most wireless routers or access points have removable antennas. Your friend can replace one of his antennas with an external antenna. This antenna will have a long coax cable that will allow him to mount the antenna outside or near an outside window. This antenna will usually have a higher gain rating (in db), so it will have longer range. You may also need to install a repeater in a window of your house, maybe with an external antenna, to grab the weaker outside signal and amplify it your house so your computer can receive it.

If you have a pc, you may need a wireless adapter in order to install the wireless software. If its a laptop, you need to either turn on the wireless switch (mine is holding down fn and pushing f2) which can be just a switch on the side of the computer. You also need the wireless software installed. I had this same problem with my laptop when we first got wireless.

You'll need a card called a wireless G card for your desktop and your buddy needs the wireless G Router.

They are like $50.00 and up at Wal-Mart
