The Secret Service offers these pointers:

-- the presidential portrait on the bill should be lifelike and not blend into the background;

-- the jagged border of the Federal Reserve and Treasury seals should be sharp and clear;

-- serial numbers should be evenly spaced and printed in the same ink color as the Treasury Seal.

Authentic currency paper is embedded with tiny red and blue fibers.

One way you can tell if money is fake is that you can burn the money and if it turned red the money is fake but if the flame stayed black the money is real

You can hold it up to the light and on the right side you should see a faint face of the president on the bill. This only works on bills 5$ and up.

There is a marker most retail stores use that marks black if the bill is fake, and brownish yellow if it's real. The only problem...people are getting around that by using a real $5 but printing a $100 on top so it still marks as if it's real. Retail stores also use black lights to look for the president's face (it should match whoever is on the bill) and each denomination has a different color strip in it that you can look for.

If it's a $5 bill or higher, hold it up to light. If it's real then there will be a thin strip inside it that can only be seen by holding to light & if you look carefully it should say something on it. If it's a five it'll say something like US Five & so on with each type of bill. As for $1 bills....I have no clue how to check that.

texture, blue and red fibers, watermark, security strip, microprinting, ink. it should be quite easy to tell a fake from real.
