This is more of a comment board then a question but to respond to a question in voting that I can no longer comment on. Someone stated the the VR4 could to 180 and those who thought otherwise had no clue. I emailed mitusbishi with the question what is the top speed of the fastest 3000 produced. The answer from the people that make the car (I think they have a clue what they are talking about) is that the fastest top speed they ever achieved was with a 1998 Mitusbishi 3000GT VR4 which had a 320hp twin turbo V6 and they said they were able to achieve a top speen of 159mph. So you can say what you want but this is a undisputable fact from the people that make the vehical. So the fastest stock 3000 ever manufactered has a top speed of 159 on a level surface, no faster, this is the fact.

"imapirate" couldnt be more correct. Just because your speedo says 150 doesnt mean you are doing anywhere near that fast, they do become less and less accurate the faster you go, expecailly in older vehicals. If you ever go to the track and run 1/4 miles with a fast car, the next time you are there take a look at what your speedo says your doing when you cross the 1/4 line and what your posted time is, they are always different with the posted time showing a slower time then your speedo. Strong work "imapirate"

gotta remember, ppl think that just cuz your speedo hits 180 your really traveling that fast. most speedos become extremely inaccurate past 90-ish-MPH. hell, ive taken my 99 Integra, not even a GS-R, up to 152 on the speedo....the GS-R tops at like 125 or something, which means i was doing maybe a buck 15.
speedos dont mean crap unless your cars built for 150+ mph driving, and in this country there's not many out those out there.

It will depend on the year. 91-96, the base and SL will both be DOHC non-turbo engines with a speedometer that tops off at 160 MPH. The VR-4 will have larger 5-spoke wheels (if stock), the active aero rear wing (you can tell, the center support for the wing will be thick, have a hinge on the front of it, and have the light built into it - the non-turbo wing has the light as a part of the wing itself, has a narrow center support, and no hinge), and a 180 MPH Speedometer. Also - look in the center gauge pods - if there is a boost gauge instead of a battery power gauge on the far right, that is a VR-4. In 94, the VR-4 was changed from a 5-speed manual to a 6-speed manual, making it more distinctive from its lower kin. 97-98, the base will have a SOHC V6, the SL will have the DOHC VC, and the VR-4 will still have the twin turbo DOHC V6. Active Aero is no longer there, so you won't be able to tell by that. The gauges will still be a dead giveaway though. The Speedometer is also the same for this year. Also, the VR-4 is still a 6-speed manual instead of a 5-speed like the rest of the lineup. For '99, there are the same range in engines, but the VR-4 has a distinctive "combat-style" wing. Otherwise, it shares the same qualities as the previous years. If you look under the car, a VR-4 will have a transfer case and a driveshaft running to the rear wheels - the SL and Base will not, as they are front-wheel drive. Also - if you look under the hood, it is obvious - a base is SOHC, the SL is DOHC with the intake leading strait to the throttle body at the back left of the intake plenum, while the VR-4 will have an intake that runs beneath a Y-shaped pipe and splits to the front turbo and rear turbo. I will attach links to photos. Finally - the rear bumper should say "SL" or "VR-4" if it is stock and hasn't been damaged or worn off with time. The B-pillar false window should also say "24-valve" for the SL, "twin-turbo" for the VR-4, or nothing for the base. Once again - this may have worn off, so better to look at the engine. This advice also works for the Dodge Stealth - the Base is the SOHC 3000GT, the ES and R/T are different trims of the SL, and the R/T Twin Turbo is the VR-4. It is the same car, just re-badged.

ha, personally I owned a 3000GT and I dumped it off on ebay as fast as I could...I hated the thing with a passion. Handling was awful, I could barely get it over 100 mph before it was all over the place, and it just simply ran like crap. I had to buy another eclipse after that experience.
