if we didn't care about what race we are? why do we have to have pride groups? I'm asian and i don't think we should have an Asian pride group at highschool. I think we should just get rid of all those pride groups and just accept that everyone is different. why do we need to feel pride for the way we look or where we were born? shouldn't we be more proud of what we've worked for instead of something that happened by luck? i just don't see the point in being proud of something we didn't work for. personally, i don't think something is worth having if i don't stuggle for it.

I totally agree. I am so tired of all the different groups that support race. Hey...what about me? I am decendent from Sweden....do I have Swedes day? Don't get me wrong...I am proud of where I come from and history is one of my passions....but come on....too many groups....

I do agree with what you are saying. But I don't think pride is the reason behind it. I think ignorance more than pride plays a good part of it. But what we need is to learn acceptance. You can have pride in any aspect of life. Most people do everything possible to be different. But what’s to stop people from ridiculing that person, picking on that person, or beating that person because of the way they look, the way they act, or any other differences they may have. Accepting every person’s differences is the only way to solve the problem.

I think you can have it BOTH ways. You can be proud of who you are and where you come from and what race you are AND still accept that everyone is different. In fact, having pride groups makes it MORE likely that we will accept one another as different, because through the pride group you recognize and put it out in the open that you ARE different. That said, you are definitely onto something important here. Recognizing our worth through what we work for is the best way to judge, evaluate, and promote a person in life. Recognizing people for who they are in the inside as individuals is more important than recognizing them for their outside and arbitrary appearance. But that doesn't make race unimportant, nor should it. There is nothing wrong with finding cultural similarities and differences and using those to form groups, because that is an easy way to make friends and find things in common. It is an easy way to feel like you belong somewhere and to formulate your overall identity. It does not have to be a bad thing. It is only wrong when you start to think that your group is better than other groups simply because of those arbitrary characteristics, and of course this does happen. I agree that we need to learn to accept one another despite being different, but we do not have to pretend we are all the same to do it. Discrimination could just as easily appear when we try to be all the same, because the fact is that we DO look and act differently. I don't think that is what you mean, but that is the potential problem with eliminating social groups. We need to learn to accept one another despite being proud of who we are.

I tihnk you're right. I think all those groups in high school are either just there for kids to find a date (lame) or there for people to parade around in. It isn't needed because it only reminds us of how we are different. I do like to appreciate different cultures. I was one of those kids that would have joined the asian, european, latin pride if I wasn't so shy back then because I liked learning about different people. But I don't think groups should be so exclusive. It just unnecessarily pushes people away.

That's very good thought, but if you study human nature... we have ego that keep telling us to be 'superior' than others, and forming a group is very easy, effortless way to be superior than others. If we don't have race difference, then probably we'll find something else to discriminate each other...
Sad, huh? Good news is, if you aware about that, you'll not likely to be a pupet of ego, so let's keep studying one's mind!

Well said. You should take a stand at your school and try and change that. Groups like that, even though they say they're trying to help, I think they're just promoting racial differences. It's basically self-segregation.

If all of your philosophy is as rational as this, you have a character to be proud of!
