Hi, I mistakenly put several gallons of water in my gas tank yesterday (out of a gas can marked GAS, that smelled like gas), how do I go about getting it out? I didn't realize it was water (I thought it was diesel, at first, until I talked to my boyfriend, who said no, he'd put water in the gas can), so I tried over and over to get it to start, do you suppose my car will ever run again? Gives a whole new meaning to the term "flooding" it trying to start it!

It's stuck out in the middle of nowhere, very literally, stuck, when I had my dad pull it off the road, he pulled it into a sand pit accidentally, I can't hardly even see underneath the car, let alone pull the gas tank. He went out of town today, so I can't even have him pull it into town, IF I could find a mechanic to work on it, there's only two in the whole town and they're backed up for weeks. It doesn't sound like I have weeks, it needs to be drained immediately, right? The car has 150,000 plus miles on it, do you really think my insurance would cover it?

According to my brainiac boyfriend, his boss told him to do it, I guess the trackhoe needed water and they couldn't find anything else to put it in. I didn't know it was water until hours after I tried starting it, when he finally got done fishing (!!) and came down off the mountain, all mad cause I hadn't met him up there like we planned.

Hello Jax , I am a ase certfied auto technician with 20 years experience . You will need to drain & flush tank & lines & change the fuel filter . Some import cars have a drain plug on the tank. If your car is ddomestic you will probably have to remove the tank. When you fill the tank with fresh gas add a dry gas product , made to remove moisture. You can find this at a auto parts store. Hope this helps .

Ways To Get Gas Out

Several gallons in an empty tank is a big problem. The best solution is to remove the tank and drain it. You can also try and siphon out as much as you can and put STP Gas treatment or any other alcohol based de icer in. It will take several cans of this plus fresh gasoline. If water has reached your fuel filter this will have to be replaced also. No matter which way you go you have a big job in front of you.

First I would smack my boyfriend for putting Water in a can marked gasoline.
I wish you had not tried to start the car once you knew the gasoline was water.
Your best bet now is to drain the fuel tank completely. I suggest you have your car taken to your auto mechanic. The mechanic will have to drain the tank, possibly even remove the tank to flush it out. All fuel filters will now have to be changed and all the fuel lines will have to be drained and flushed out.
Once these items have been completed and fresh fuel installed your car should start and run just fine.
Also, mark the gas can "Water" and make sure your boyfriend dosen't put gasoline back in it.

For putting water in a gas can, you boyfriend should be the one to siphon it out with his mouth. Where did you find this genius? What possible reason would somebody put water in a container previously used to contain gas? What in the world was he going to use the water for?

Get it towed to a repair shop that can drain gas tanks (not all have the necessary permits). Put the charge on your boyfriend's card.

IF THERE ISN"T MUCH WATER, go o to the auto store, there is several products you can put in to mix with the water and it will burn off with the fuel, if your tank was close to empty, fill it up to reduce the water to deisel ratio. plus get your fuel filter changed....water is common in fuel, as it condesates

water is heavier than fuel, so if theere is a draincock at the bottom of your tank you can drain out the water and not waste that much fuel...or you can siphon it all out, but then you have to dispose it at a haz. place

Make your boyfriend pay because he's the idiot who put water in a gas can that was being used for deisel...none of these fluids are supposed to mix with another that is why universally red=gas, blue=water,...

Your gas tank would have to be taken off and drained. If you tried to start it - it may have ruined the engine - I would take it to a mechanic.

You need to take that to a good mechanic quickly to have the tank drained, and the lines pumped clean, or your risking major and expensive damage to the entire system.

pull and drain the tank...flush the fuel lines...add fresh gas to the tank along with a couple of bottles of HEET.
